Diesel Emissions

August 29, 2010

 2011-fsuperduty

The improved combustion system is the heart of the all new 6.7L Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel engine, helping deliver a balance of power, fuel efficiency and reduced nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. A combination of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and aftertreatment system work together to help make the all new 6.7L Power Stroke the cleanest Ford Power Stroke diesel engine ever. The three step aftertreatment system includes a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), new-for-2011 Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) using Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

CLEANEST POWER STROKE DIESEL ENGINE EVER

Step 1: Cleaning and Heating

The Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)

  • The first step in the exhaust aftertreatment process and could be referred to as the cleaning and heating step
  • Converts and oxidizes hydrocarbons into water and carbon dioxide
  • Provides and promotes heat into the exhaust system to help increase the conversion efficiency

Step 2: Removing the NOx

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

  • A new-for-2011 technology on Super Duty
  • The second step in the exhaust aftertreatment process where most of the NOx is removed from the exhaust stream
  • Located between the DOC and the DPF in the exhaust system
  • Uses a liquid chemical reactant, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
  • DEF Dosing Module sprays a fine mist of DEF into the exhaust stream to react with the NOx in the exhaust as it passes through the SCR (when heated, DEF splits into ammonia and carbon dioxide)
  • These molecules are atomized and vaporized and evenly distributed into the exhaust flow
  • Once the DEF solution is combined with the exhaust flow, chemical reactions convert the ammonia and NOx into water and harmless nitrogen

Step 3: Removing the Soot

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)

  • The last step in the exhaust aftertreatment process and designed to scrub any remaining soot from the exhaust
  • Soot can be described as the black smoke seen in diesel exhaust
  • Located in the exhaust system, after the SCR
  • Periodically cleans itself through a process known as “regeneration”, which is similar to a small incinerator burning off trapped particulates
  • Passive regeneration naturally burns off soot when exhaust temperatures are high enough
  • Active regeneration (forced burn-off) occurs as needed, depending on operational use

DEF FAST FACTS

Injection of DEF to reduce NOx is a proven technology used throughout the auto industry. Unlike other manufacturers’ solutions, the DEF system allows the diesel engine to run at its optimum range in terms of fuel mixture – some systems require the engine to run richer, which can be harmful to diesel engines, to control the NOx.

  • DEF is a solution of approximately one-third high-purity urea and two-thirds demineralized water that is clear, nontoxic and safe to handle.
  • DEF tank, supply module and supply line are heated to help ensure DEF remains in a liquid state, preventing it from freezing while in operation or thawing from a frozen state.
  • DEF is injected into the exhaust system, to greatly reduce NOx levels.
  • The DEF tank includes temperature and fluid level sensors, and when the level reaches an approximate 800 mile distance-to-empty level, an instrument cluster warning alerts the driver.
  • On Pickups, the DEF tank and fill nozzle are located together with the diesel fuel tank and fill nozzle on the driver’s side of the vehicle and require refilling at oil-change intervals.

POWER STROKE EMISSIONS STRAGEGY

  • Allows the engine to operate with a leaner fuel mixture than previous Power Stroke engines
  • A leaner fuel mixture has less fuel and more air
  • Leaner-burning engines help produce less particulate emissions
  • Less particulate emissions result in less-frequent DPF regeneration
  • Less-frequent regeneration helps improve overall engine fuel efficiency

Ford Fiesta Earns 2010 Top Safety Pick

August 26, 2010

The Institute for Highway Safety just awarded the Ford Fiesta  its top safety pick. The Fiesta is the first mini-car to be awarded this honor since the introduction of a new roof strength test. Fiesta received the rating of “good” in every crash test that the sedan and hatchback underwent. Ford now has more Top Safety Picks than any other automaker, with eight vehicles taking home top honors.

The Fiesta’s high level of safety can be attributed to its extensive use of high-strength steels, Trinity front crash structure, and the most airbags in its car segment. Ford has gone as far as including a driver’s knee airbag on the Fiesta to help reduce lower leg injuries in the event of a frontal collision. The knee airbag is exclusive to the Fiesta and won’t be found in Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, or Toyota Yaris. The Fiesta features standard electronic stability control. Additionally, the Fiesta has an energy-absorbing body structure designed to redirect crash forces away from the passenger compartment. More than half of the all new Ford Fiesta’s body structure utilizes these high-strength steels in its floor structure, front rails, beams, and in its integrated body reinforcement ring, thereby offering even more protection for occupants in side impact crashes.

Fiesta’s Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) sensors detect occupant weight and seat belt status to optimize the force of deployment. Also available on Ford Fiesta is AdvanceTrac with ESC (electronic stability control), which uses sensors to detect and measure side-to-side skidding conditions, by monitoring speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle.

New Regulations For Vehicles With GVWR of 10,001 to 26,000 lbs.

August 11, 2010

The Public Utilities Commsission (PUCO) has recently revised its rules for motor carrier transportation safety. The newly revised rules extend PUCO’s jurisdiction to regulate vehicle safety to vehicles that are operating on a not-for-hire basis within the state with a GVWR of 10,001 to 26,000 pounds.

Active enforcement of the revised rules will not begin until January 1, 2011. No forfeitures or monetary penalties will be issued until this date unless violations are egregious. PUCO and the Ohio State Patrol have been instructed to use these inspections as opportunities to educate the driver/carrier.

The following is a summary of the requirements if the GVWR is 10,001 or more:

  • Drivers must have a medical certificate (NO CDL IS REQUIRED)
  • The truck or van must have company marking on each door
  • Fire extinguisher must be accessible and secured
  • Annual vehicle inspection
  • Vehicle equipment must be in proper working order
  • Maintenance records must be maintained
  • Must maintain $1 million of insurance when hauling vehicles
  • When motor vehicles are hauled there are special requirements for securing the load that must be followed
  • A driver qualification file must be maintained – including the application for hire and the medical certificate
  • Log books must be maintained, unless:
    • If the vehicle(s) is within 150 miles of the business no log book needs to be maintained IF
      • The driver returns to the work reporting location and is released from work within 12 consecutive hours;
      • The driver does not drive more than 11 hours;
      • The driver must have at least 10 hours off between 12 hour shifts; and
      • The company maintains and retains for a period of 6 months accurate time records.

If my vehicle has a GVWR of 10,001 or more and crosses state lines to make pick ups or deliveries, what else must be done?

  • The vehicle must have a USDOT number if the vehicle crosses state lines
  • The application for a USDOT number will require a safety audit from the PUCO
  • Information on obtaining a USDOT number may be found at www.fmcsa.dot.gov

How can I assure that my company’s vehicles do not fall under these new rules?

  • Ensure your vehicle GVWR is less than 10,001 pounds if possible. HOWEVER, BE SURE THAT ANY LOAD DOES NOT EXCEED THE VEHICLE’S LOAD CAPACITY!
  • If you are using a truck and trailer combination to move cars or motorcycles/APV’s you may not be able to avoid these new rules as the GVWR of the truck and trailer must be less than 10,001 pounds.

Vehicles and drivers that are found to be in noncompliance can be pulled from service on the spot. Additionally, monetary fines may be issued by PUCO. Active enforcement will begin January 1, 2011.

Fuller Ford performs annual DOT inspections for $89.95. This includes pulling the wheels and performing a complete brake inspection.  The customer will be notified of any violations of PUCO regulations and advised on any brake repairs or other maintenance.  If it is the first DOT inspection, including new vehicles, the DOT inspection plus the required fire extinguisher and triangle kit costs $229.95. Fuller Ford will also put the necessary inspection decal on the truck, keep the required files, and notify you every year when your inspection is due.  Not only are you complying with state law, but you are getting a very important and proper vehicle inspection as well.  Please contact Fuller Ford’s service department for an appointment at http://www.fullerisford.com/service.aspx

MAJOR SUV FUEL ECONOMY GAINS, TECHNOLOGY, STYLE HIGHLIGHT REINVENTION OF FORD EXPLORER

August 9, 2010

Ford Explorer – the vehicle that defined a segment – has been completely reinvented, raising customers’ expectations of sport utility vehicle (SUV) fuel efficiency, safety, technology, capability and quality. The all-new Explorer was recently launched to its Facebook friends in a unique social media initiative, followed by reveal events throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Shattering SUV fuel economy and performance expectations

The 2011 Explorer with V6 power is expected to deliver more than 20 percent better fuel economy than the 2010 model, shattering conventional expectations for SUV fuel efficiency. When equipped with the available 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine, Explorer fuel economy is expected to improve by more than 30 percent and exceed the 2010 Honda Pilot and 2010 Toyota Highlander V6.

Weight reduction is a key element in improving Explorer fuel efficiency. While adding significant content to the vehicle, engineers were able to reduce total vehicle weight by almost 100 pounds through the use of lighter materials such as an aluminum hood. Explorer weight loss is even more impressive, as the latest versions of Honda Pilot and Toyota 4Runner have added pounds versus previous models.

Explorer’s available advanced 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 delivers the power of a normally aspirated V6 without compromising four-cylinder fuel economy. Aimed at the SUV buyer whose top priority is fuel economy, this turbocharged and intercooled I-4 engine delivers a projected 237 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,700 through 4,000 rpm. The EcoBoost employs direct injection of gasoline, Ti-VCT, direct-acting mechanical bucket (DAMB) valve lifters and four valves per cylinder.

Explorer’s standard powertrain combines front-wheel drive with a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine, delivering an estimated 290 horsepower and 255 lb.-ft. of torque. Ti-VCT allows individually optimized camshaft timing of valve opening and closing events to improve mechanical efficiency while delivering increased power and reducing part-throttle emissions. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, this powerful, flexible and efficient V6 is projected to deliver more than 20 percent better fuel economy versus the previous Explorer V6 model.

Explorer’s variable-displacement air-conditioning compressor provides a fuel economy benefit with less drag and smoother transition for improved driveability.

Each Explorer engine is paired with a unique six-speed automatic transmission, combining lowered initial gears for improved off-the-line acceleration and higher gearing for improved efficiency at lower engine rpm when cruising.

Explorer V6 models are available with an intelligent 4WD system that adds terrain management. Situation-selectable, this powertrain advancement takes the guesswork out of 4WD range choice.

A driver need only turn the console-mounted knob to the proper setting among snow, sand, mud and normal modes. This system also includes a hill descent mode.

Simpler and more convenient for SUV veterans, the system will be a confidence-builder for drivers new to the segment.

Contemporary design with segment-leading craftsmanship and quietness

In addition to its clean, modern design inside and out, Explorer aims to please SUV shoppers with a thoughtful, flexible interior package that abounds with clever storage capacity. The new SUV features more head and shoulder room, three rows of flexible seating, and room for everything families want to take along on their adventures.

The Explorer design – inside and out – is executed with world-class craftsmanship. Tight margin gaps are just one indication of the immense attention to detail applied to craftsmanship across the spectrum, from design to engineering to manufacturing.

Quietness – another profound advancement in the all-new 2011 Ford Explorer – also will signal quality to customers.

The team enhanced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) control for the all-new Explorer using an advanced technology called NoiseVision. A ball with hundreds of tiny cameras and microphones, NoiseVision allows engineers to pinpoint and address potential noise issues earlier in the development process.

Explorer is expected to be superior to in-segment competitors and rival premium SUVs in quietness and NVH control.

Explorer safety – strength, technology and innovation

The all-new Explorer targets top safety ratings with a stiff unibody structure and a class-leading suite of active and passive safety features and technologies, plus another Ford safety innovation – the world’s first second-row inflatable rear belts.

Rear seat passengers – often children or mature passengers – can be more vulnerable to head, chest and neck injuries. Ford’s unique inflatable rear belts spread impact forces across more than five times the area than conventional seat belts, reducing pressure on the chest while helping to control head and neck motion. Belt comfort should also help increase usage rates. Studies show inflatable belts to be more comfortable for passengers due to padding.

From the boron front bumper beam through the hydroformed front frame rails and high-strength steel side-impact tubes, Explorer’s rigid body structure is designed to provide robust protection for occupants. In the instance of a crash, these elements come together to protect Explorer driver and passengers inside a safety cage of strength.

Stretching the breadth of capability

The 2011 Ford Explorer redefines customer expectations for driving dynamics and comfort – on any road, anytime, anywhere – while stretching the breadth of SUV capability. Transforming Explorer’s driving quality was central to creating an SUV for 21st century customers.

The shift to a unibody construction platform enabled a reduction in road noise and significantly decreased Explorer body roll in dynamic cornering situations. Independent front suspension is of the short- and long-arm configuration with a 32-millimeter front stabilizer bar. Independent rear suspension is the SR1 configuration, so-named for its one-to-one shock absorber ratio, which enables precise ride control.

Explorer’s EPAS system allows for variable rates of assistance based on speed, turn-in and direction. In addition to optimized steering feel, tight on-centering and appropriate resistance, EPAS provides a fuel economy benefit in comparison to traditional hydraulic power assist systems. EPAS also enables a competitive turning radius for optimum maneuverability in parking situations, combined with increased assistance at low speeds for parking ease.

EPAS allows for the addition of Curve Control, a new feature that senses when a driver enters a turn too quickly and applies brake pressure to stabilize the vehicle.

In addition, EPAS enables the optional active park assist technology. When activated, the system scans for a suitable spot, calculates the trajectory, and steers the vehicle. The driver continues to control brake and throttle inputs, but the system steers the vehicle throughout the parking maneuver.

Off-roading standout on a variety of surfaces

The key to Explorer 4WD capability is Ford’s new terrain management system.

Replacing the traditional SUV transfer case configuration, the new system takes the guesswork out of maximizing 4WD and the capabilities it enables. Rather than employment of four-high, four-low and auto settings, Explorer terrain management is selectable by situation. The four settings – available by shift-on-the-fly – include normal, mud, sand and snow.

Explorer models with V6 power are rated to tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds. To aid with hookup – especially when alone – a reverse camera with zoom-in functionality is available, allowing a driver to back up to the trailer on-center. The Explorer towing package includes trailer sway control – a stability package shared with the Ford F-150 pickup – to help minimize trailer sway. Trailer brake controller wiring is also included, as is a tow/haul mode. Engaging tow/haul mode increases engine braking to help slow the vehicle and trailer when descending steep grades.

The 2011 Explorer will be assembled at Ford’s Chicago manufacturing facility. Production begins late this year, and Explorer will be available in dealerships this winter.
