Ford Active Park Assist

April 25, 2010

Ford has made parallel parking a breeze with the new Active Park Assist feature. The new Active Park Assist helps drivers parallel park with the touch of a button and without ever touching the steering wheel. Active Park Assist is now available on the 2010 Escape and Flex. Active Park Assist uses a ultrasonic-based sensing system and Electric Power Steering (EPS) to steer the vehicle into a parking spot. EPS also improves fuel economy up to 5 percent, while reducing CO2 emissions and enhancing performance, compared with traditional steering.   The often stressful and frustrating task of parallel parking soon will be as easy as pressing a button, thanks to this exclusive new technology from Ford.

Active Park Assist uses an ultrasonic-based sensing system and Electric Power Steering (EPS) to position the vehicle for parallel parking, calculate the optimal steering angle, and quickly steer the vehicle into a parking spot.   “With the touch of a button, drivers can parallel park quickly, easily and safely without ever touching the steering wheel,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of Global Product Development. “This is another example of exclusive Ford technology that makes the driving experience easier and more enjoyable for customers.”

Active Park Assist system uses sensors on the front and rear of the vehicle to guide the vehicle into a parking space. The technology is a major leap forward in speed and ease of use compared with the camera-reliant systems offered by competitors, including a video camera-based system offered by Lexus. Ford’s system requires less driver interface and reduces the risk of selecting a parking spot that is too tight. Ford’s Active Park Assist also works in downhill parking situations, unlike competing systems.

   How Active Park Assist works:

  • The driver activates the system by pressing an instrument panel button, which activates the ultrasonic sensors to measure and identify a feasible parallel parking space.
  • The system then prompts the driver to accept the system assistance to park.
  • The steering system then takes over and steers the car into the parking space hands-free. The driver still shifts the transmission and operates the gas and brake pedals.
  • A visual and/or audible driver interface advises the driver about the proximity of other cars, objects and people and provides instructions.
  • While the steering is all done automatically, the driver remains responsible for safe parking and can interrupt the system by grasping the steering wheel.

Active Park Assist is enabled by Ford’s advanced EPS technology. In addition to helping with parallel parking, EPS improves fuel economy up to 5 percent, while reducing CO2 emissions and enhancing steering performance compared with traditional hydraulic powered-assisted steering systems. EPS saves fuel primarily because the steering system is powered by an electric motor connected to vehicle’s battery, as opposed to engine-mounted hydraulic pump steering systems. By 2012, Ford plans to fit nearly 90 percent of the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lineup with EPS.   “As we use advanced technology to improve the fuel efficiency across our vehicle lineup, we have the opportunity to introduce new comfort and convenience innovations like Active Parking Assist,” said Ali Jammoul, Ford’s chief engineer for chassis engineering and steering systems. “This is technology not for the sake of technology, but one designed to meet the needs and wants of customers.”

As Ford introduces EPS in more vehicles, it will be able to offer Active Parking Assist in more models. In addition, Ford is working on using EPS and other sensors for other smart technologies, including one that could prevent a vehicle from drifting out of lane on the highway.   Active Park Assist works in tandem with other new technologies that will be offered on certain Ford vehicles, including Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™) and Cross Traffic Alert. BLIS employs a sensor on the outboard rear quarter panel that monitors the traditional blind spot area, and can notify the driver with a warning indicator light in the corresponding side view mirror if the sensors in this optional system detect a vehicle in the blind spot. Cross Traffic Alert uses BLIS sensors to help detect cross traffic when backing out of a parking space.

Ford now has Industry’s Highest Customer Satisfaction, Survey Says

April 22, 2010

DEARBORN, April 19, 2010 – Ford Motor Company now has the highest customer satisfaction

with vehicle quality among all major automakers, a new consumer research study shows.

Eighty-four percent of customers who purchased 2010 model-year Ford, Lincoln and Mercury

cars and trucks are satisfied with the quality of their vehicle, a 4 percentage point improvement

since the fourth quarter of 2009, according to the first quarter Global Quality Research System

(GQRS) study conducted for Ford by RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

With the improvement, Ford’s customer satisfaction scores are now significantly higher than all

other full-line automotive manufacturers, including Asian and European automakers, according

to the study.

The study also showed Ford has the fewest number of vehicle defects or “things gone wrong”

among all full-line manufacturers in the first three months of ownership. Owners of 2010 model

Ford, Lincoln and Mercury owners reported 1,107 TGWs per 1,000 vehicles — an 8 percent

improvement compared to last year.

“To become the No. 1 automaker in terms of customer satisfaction with vehicle quality is

amazing accomplishment and testament to the whole company’s commitment to quality,” said

Bennie Fowler, Ford group vice president, Global Quality. “All the third parties studies are

showing the same thing – Ford now has world-class quality.”

As Ford’s quality has improved, it has reduced warranty repair rates on vehicles in their first

three months of service by an average of more than 40 percent in every major business region

around the world in the past three years.

“Ford has proven its commitment to quality by demonstrating steady improvements through

consistency and discipline.” said Donald Pietrowski, president, RDA Group. “Those

improvements are clearly reflected in rising customer satisfaction with its products.”

Ford captured eight segment leaders in customer satisfaction, TGW or both. Notably, Fusion

Hybrid owners now report 93 percent satisfaction with the quality of their vehicle while 92

percent of Taurus owners are satisfied.

The following models led their respective segments in the survey:

• Taurus – Satisfaction leader D/E car.

• Fusion Hybrid –Satisfaction leader C/D car

• Milan Hybrid – TGW leader C/D car

• Focus — Satisfaction leader C car

• Mountaineer – TGW leader Medium Traditional Utility

• Expedition – TGW and Satisfaction leader Large Utility

• Navigator – TGW and Satisfaction Leader Large Premium Utility

• Ranger – TGW and Satisfaction Leader Compact Pickup

These dramatic gains in quality have also contributed to a 23 percent year-over-year

improvement in the resale values of Ford vehicles with one to five years on the road – outpacing

the industry average by 4 percentage points.

Go to for news releases and high-resolution photographs.

“While we are proud of the progress we’ve made, we know how important it is to keep the

momentum going,” said Fowler. “We can never be satisfied.”

The GQRS study is conducted on a quarterly basis with scores assessed from survey responses

collected from owners of vehicles purchased within specific time frames.

New vehicle owners are asked to report any defects or issues as well as rate their satisfaction

with vehicle quality on a scale of 1 to 10 across an array of vehicle systems and features.

The all new 2011 Ford Fiesta is scheduled to arrive in showrooms this summer. With its cool design, zippy performance and impressive content, Fiesta is not simply the new kid on the block…it will quickly become the most popular in its class! The Ford Fiesta is big on style and on looks. Eye-popping features, like its signature inverted trapezoid lower grille opening, make the 2011 Ford Fiesta stand out from the rest of the crowd. It also boasts of such features as sweeping quad-beam headlamps that frame and connect the hood to muscular, sculpted front fenders. Razor-slash side panels, dramatic tail lamps with honeycomb detailing, and muscular rear quarter panels are just a few of the other bold features that will set the 2011 Ford Fiesta apart from the competition. The new Fiesta will offer 9 different vivid paint colors, such Lime Squeeze, Bright Magenta, and Blue Flame. Two premium paints will also be available: Yellow Blaze Metallic Tri-coat and Red Candy Metallic with Tinted Clearcoat. The Fiesta will be offered in either a 4-door sedan or a 5-door hatchback model. Four trim levels are available: the base S, SE, SEL, and the SES.

Drivers won’t be able to contain themselves when they take this car for a test-drive and experience firsthand its power and European driving dynamics. The Ford Fiesta’s energetic powertrain and impressive handling features a 119-horsepower 1.6L Ti-VCT Duratec I-4 engine and your choice of standard 5-speed manual transmission or available PowerShift 6-speed automatic. The Twin independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) technology enables the engine to have a smaller footprint and improved fuel economy while continuously optimizing camshaft timing for enhanced performance. The standard 5-speed manual transmission includes gear ratios selected to offer energetic off-the-line performance and impressive fuel economy. When Fiesta is paired with the available 6-speed automatic, it’s projected to deliver best-in-class. The 2011 Ford Fiesta beats all its primary competitors (2010 Toyota Yaris, 2010 Nissan Versa, and the 2010 Honda Fit) in fuel economy ratings. In addition to gas-sipping fuel economy that helps conserve natural resources and cash, the Fiesta offers up low emissions. Additionally, the Fiesta’s headliner is made up of 50% post-consumer yarn. The vehicle is approximately 85% recyclable by weight.

A sporty, European driving dynamic comes from specially tuned front struts, stabilizer bar and a rear twist-beam axle that keep Fiesta confident and sure-footed. Driving is further enhanced with electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering for agile, precise response and low noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) for a smooth ride. The 2011 Ford Fiesta also features: Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) with Drift Control and Active Nibble Control, AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control, Hill Start Assist (automatic transmission), wide front and rear track for ground-hugging handling, and a large 22mm front stabilizer bar to help minimize body roll.

The Fiesta’s interior features boldly sculpted surfaces, contrasting colors and comfortable, supportive materials. The instrument panel center stack, which is the focal point, was designed to feel as useful and familiar as the keypad on a mobile phone. Ford has put an emphasis on craftsmanship inside the new Fiesta. Its interior features premium materials throughout. From the feel of the materials to the uniform look, Fiesta’s interior was designed to impress. Inside you will find: first-row bucket seats, uniquely designed, easy-to-use center stack and controls, 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks for flexibility, 7 different color/upholstery combinations including 3 leather options (SES/SEL). The Ford Fiesta also offers customers a number of standard and available features that are not typically seen in its class. These features increase convenience and add connectivity: air conditioning, audio input jack, Easy Fuel capless fuel filler, 12-volt power point, AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control, power door locks, rear-window defroster, tilt-telescoping steering wheel, 7 standard airbags, acoustic laminated windshield, a variety of storage areas, and 5 cup holders (including one that will accommodate a smaller-sized energy-drink can).

2012 Taurus Police Interceptor

April 9, 2010

Ford Motor Company recently unveiled its brand new 2012 Taurus Police Interceptor. Ford’s new Interceptor replaces the Crown Victoria with a new and improved version of the police cruiser. Police departments will have their choice of two different powertrains in the Police Interceptor. The 265-horsepower, normally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 is standard, and sends its power to the front wheels only. Those police departments looking for more power can opt for the Ecoboost twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6, which provides 365-horsepower, which is channeled to all four wheels. The n/a engine offers the choice of front or all-wheel drive. The Ecoboost engine, however, will only be available with all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive system will sport unique tuning for more predictable handling and better dynamic behavior. The Taurus Police Interceptor will demonstrate a surprising balance for its weight.

The interior of the Taurus Police Interceptor is 90% new. The six-speed automatic comes with a column shifter instead of a console-mounted shifter found on nonpurpose-built Tauruses. The lower bolstering has been removed from the front seats in order to provide a dish for police officers’ utility belts. The center console remains the same width as the previous Crown Vic model, which better facilitates adaptation of current computer equipment to the new car. Police officers will not only be able to plug their own computers into the console, but they will have more computing power from the cruiser itself. Blind-spot warning, cross-traffic monitors for low speed situations, and reverse camera and sensors are just a few of the other high-tech standard features of the new Interceptor.

Safety features have been upgraded as well. Ballistic door panels will be optional. Additionally, the Taurus Police Interceptor comes equipped with anti-stab plates, rather than the simpler stability bars or stab bars. Inserted in the backs of the front seats, the anti-stab plates provide another layer of protection between cops and their back-seat passengers.  The rear doors of the vehicle open an additional 10 degrees, making a total of 71 degrees to allow easier loading of criminals and miscreants.

The Taurus Police Interceptor’s braking system comes with all new rotors and calipers for a 60% improvement in swept area. Electrical improvements, such as a heavy-duty 220-amp alternator, and wiring improvements make it easier for police departments to hook up various tools used in police cruisers. With the addition of an enlarged radiator with cooling capacity of about two times the average full-size sedan, engine cooling is greatly improved. Even with all these extras, fuel economy with the base V-6 model will be a 25% improvement over the previous Crown Vic model. The Ecoboost V-6 engine also beats the Crown Vic on fuel-economy.

Ford will produce the Police Interceptor alongside the Taurus at its Chicago, Illinois plant. Production on the 2012 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor will begin immediately after Crown Victoria production has ended sometime in the fall of 2011. Fuller Ford looks forward to the arrival of the new 2012 Taurus Police Interceptor next year. As always, Fuller Ford offers Lifetime Free Oil Changes on ALL new vehicle purchases – in stock or factory ordered. This includes the Taurus Police Interceptor!
