2011 Ford Fiesta: Safety and Security

June 30, 2010

The all new 2011 Fiesta is big on safety, offering a host of accident avoidance and occupant protection features to help keep drivers and passengers safe. Here’s a quick overview of some key Fiesta safety and security features.

SEVEN STANDARD AIRBAGS

Fiesta comes with seven standard airbags, including:

  • Driver knee – Located under the instrument panel, the class-exclusive driver knee airbag works along with the driver’s front airbag to help reduce injury to legs. When the driver’s airbag deploys in a collision, the knee airbag deploys from under the instrument panel
  • Front, dual-stage – Deploy high or low output, or not at all, depending on the severity of the frontal crash to make sure the appropriate level of airbag pressure is used
  • Front-seat side – Side-impact airbags help protect front-seat occupants in certain side collisions. The airbags deploy from the sides of the front seatbacks to help protect occupants’ chest.
  • Side curtain – Combined with the front-seat side airbags, the side curtain airbags help provide protection for both head and chest in certain side-impact collisions for all outboard seating positions. These airbags are designed to slide between the glass and the occupant as it inflates

STRUCTURAL SAFETY

More than 50 percent of the Fiesta body structure is made from ultra-high-strength, lightweight boron steel, which helps protect occupant safety zones

SECURILOCK PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM

This system enhances Fiesta security by using an electronically coded ignition key (with billions of possible codes) designed to help prevent the engine from being started unless a coded key programmed to the vehicle is used.

PERSONAL SAFETY SYSTEM

The Ford Personal Safety System tailors airbag usage to the severity of the crash, driver and passenger safety belt use, driver’s seat position and passenger classification. System components include:

  • Dual-state driver and front passenger airbags
  • Electronic front crash severity sensor
  • Driver’s-seat position sensor
  • Front outboard safety belt usage sensor
  • Restraint Control Module
  • Front outboard safety belt energy management retractors
  • Front outboard safety belt pretensioners
  • “Smart” Front Passenger Sensing System

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS)

  • This accident-avoidance feature is a sensor-based system that alerts the driver to significant under inflation in any of the tires, excluding the spare
  • Pressure sensors in the tires detect actual tire pressure and activate a warning light in the vehicle’s instrument cluster when a tire is significantly underinflated

SOS POST CRASH ALERT SYSTEM

This system helps give Fiesta drivers added peace of mind by automatically:

  • Activating the hazard flashers and sounding the horn after a crash in which the airbags deploy. This can help make the vehicle easier to locate if the accident happens off the roadway

ADVANCETRAC ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL

AdvanceTrac helps the driver maintain vehicle stability in adverse driving situations or when making evasive maneuvers on slippery pavement.

  • Monitors vehicle’s cornering behavior with steering angle, lateral acceleration and yaw rate sensors, and automatically makes braking and throttle adjustments to match vehicle’s direction to the driver’s intention using Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Traction Control components
  • AdvanceTrac automatically activates whenever the vehicle is started, but may be turned off for certain situations such as when “rocking” a vehicle stuck in mud or snow

TRACTION CONTROL

Included with AdvanceTrac, Fiesta also comes standard with Traction Control, which uses a combination of brake and/or engine control to maximize available traction on slippery or loose driving surfaces at any speed.

911 ASSIST

This safety feature is part of SYNC and assists occupants in placing a 911 call in certain vehicle crashes by using a properly paired mobile phone inside the vehicle.

  • SYNC can use a properly paired mobile phone to place the 911 call
  • Occupants can cancel the call by pressing and holding the phone button on the steering wheel, or by confirming the cancellation message on the Navigation System screen
  • Connects to a 911 operator informing them of the accident
  • Opens the SYNC microphone to allow vehicle occupants to communicate hands-free with the 911 operator

Ford Leads American Automaker Resurgance In Quality

June 26, 2010

Ford Motor Company just erased any doubt regarding quality in the American auto industry. J.D. Power and Associates’ 2010 Initial Quality Study (IQS) was just released and revealed that domestic brands, as a whole, can boast of higher initial quality than their foreign counterparts for the first time in the study’s 24-year history. Ford Motor Company led the resurgence.

Ford positioned it’s self for the resurgence by making sound decisions before the current economic downturn hit. The hiring of CEO, Alan Mulally, was a pivotal move for Ford. He was able to cut costs, put money in the bank and avoid taking a government bailout, unlike the other American automakers. This in turn gave Mr. Mulally the money needed to not only restructure the company, but to develop better automobiles like the Fusion and Taurus.

Ford’s gamble has paid off, as it is now the highest-ranked mass-market automaker in initial quality.  For the first time ever, Ford moved into the list of top five brands in overall quality. Additionally, Ford has 12 models that rank within the top three in their respective IQS segments, which is more than any other carmaker in the J.D. Power and Associates study. Of these 12 models, Ford captured top honors in three segments with the Focus, Mustang, and Taurus. No other automaker can claim more than two of the study’s top honors.

“Domestic automakers have made impressive strides in steadily improving vehicle quality, particularly since 2007, “ says David Sargent, vice president of global vehicle research at J.D. Power and Associates. Sargent goes on to say that despite these great strides in vehicle quality, the consumer perception of the American auto has not yet caught up to reality. “Achieving quality comparability is the first half of the battle; convincing consumers – particularly import buyers – that they have done this is the second half.” Ford Motor Company continues to crank out vehicles that are high on quality, style, and fuel efficiency. It won’t be long before the hearts and minds of these consumers are converted considering all of the accolades that keep pouring in for Ford. Earlier this year, the 2010 Fusion was named Motor Trend Car of the Year. The Transit Connect was named 2010 North American Truck of the Year (see more stories on the Transit Connect ). The 2011 Fiesta was named MSN’s number one car under $15,000 (see MSN Fiesta story).

Fuller Ford offers Lifetime Free Oil Changes on ALL new vehicle purchases – in stock or factory ordered. Fuller Ford is the Cincinnati Tri-State Region’s leader for the hottest, cutting-edge, most fuel efficient vehicles available. Whether you are coming from Ohio, Kentucky, or Indiana, we are conveniently located right off of I-75, just west of downtown Cincinnati. Transit Connect Taxi:Big Impression, Small Footprint

June 19, 2010

ford transit connect taxi

The Ford Transit Connect Taxi will go into production and arrive in dealerships later this year as a 2011 model, adding to Ford Motor Company’s leadership in the North American taxi market. Not only does the Transit Connect Taxi standout, but it truly is a standout. The Transit Connect Taxi offers an outstanding interior package for people and cargo. With its open architecture, the taxi provides excellent interior headroom and passenger visibility.

NEW FACTORY-DIRECT TAXI PACKAGE

Ford Motor Company has turned the Transit Connect, 2010 North American Truck of the Year, into a one-of-a-kind taxi that pushes versatility boundaries. In addition to easy-access, configurable luggage space and unique vertical architecture, there’s ample passenger room. The new Transit Connect Taxi Package is assembled right at the plant – quality-assured and prepped for modifications.

DURABLE + CAPABLE = RELIABLE

Make no mistake, the Transit Connect Taxi is Built Ford Tough. It’s certified to Ford Light Commercial Vehicle Durability Standards. Suspension components and underbody structure passed requirements for potholes and curbs. That’s why cities and municipalities already recognize Transit Connect Taxi’s advantages. Saying the 2011 Ford Transit Connect Taxi “fits the bill,” the city of Boston (see related story on Transit Connect Taxi in Boston) recently became the first municipality in America to approve the versatile cab for taxi use.

STREET SMART

Fuel economy for the Transit Connect Taxi is best in class (small cargo vans): a combined 23 mpg (22 city/25 highway). Because taxi operators also asked for a version that runs on alternative fuels, Ford is offering new engine prep packages that allow conversions to both compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied propane gas (LPG). Both CNG and LPG lower taxi fleets’ operating costs and are better for the environment (see related story on Transit Connect Taxi’s alternative fuel advantage). When it comes to maneuverability, the 39-foot turning radius takes the hassle out of tight spots. Ford’s Transit Connect Taxi meets the rigors of today’s taxi market.

DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID (DEF) TOP-OFF OFFER

Background

The 2011 F-Series Super Duty 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel is equipped with advanced new technology to

meet 2010 federal emissions standards. The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology

dramatically reduces NOx levels from the emissions system. This technology uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid

(DEF), a clear fluid that is injected into the exhaust system to help convert NOx to nitrogen, a non-toxic

gas.

As part of the vehicle’s maintenance requirements, owners of the 2011 6.7L Super Duty are responsible

for keeping DEF at proper levels in order for the vehicle to operate properly. The vehicle instrument

cluster message center will indicate fluid level in the DEF tank, as well as provide warning messages

when the DEF is low and needs to be refilled. Generally, the DEF tank should be filled during the oil

change service intervals. However, depending on customer use, replenishment may need to occur

more frequently.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid Offer Details

For 2011 F-Series Super Duty 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel vehicles purchased on or before December 31,

2010, Ford Motor Company will cover the cost of the Motorcraft DEF fluid when the owner returns to the

IOLM pinpoints the remaining oil life in the vehicle by monitoring several key inputs, including:

  • · Driving habits (such as towing and workload)
  • · Hours of operation and at idle
  • · Oil and coolant temperature
  • · Engine speed and torque
  • · DPF (Diesel particulate filter) cleaning cycles

The instrument cluster’s Message Center will notify the owner when the vehicle is due for an oil

and filter change. The first scheduled maintenance can be up to one year or 10,000 miles depending

on vehicle operating conditions.
