Ford Offers Industry-First Truck App Software That Keeps F-Series Owners in the Know When They Tow

March 29, 2011

An all-new Truck App in Ford F-Series features an industry-first in truck technology – a software application for safe and easy towing and off-roading.

With more than 50 percent of F-Series owners regularly towing a trailer, Ford developed the first application to walk drivers through the proper trailer connection process, among many other features.

The Truck App is available on F-Series’ class-exclusive LCD instrument cluster screen, a beefier version of the driver information display where traditional stats on fuel economy, vehicle settings and trip tracking also live.

“The 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen presents detailed information in an engaging, easy-to-use manner so customers get the most out of their Ford trucks for work and for play,” said Joseph Fodera, cluster applications engineer.

A checklist asks drivers a set of questions to help ensure the trailer is connected properly:

  • Ball coupler connected and locked?
  • Tongue jack raised?
  • Mirrors adjusted?
  • Electrical wiring connected?
  • Lights functioning correctly (running lights, left/right turn and brake lights)?
  • Trailer Brake Controller gain setting adjusted?
  • Wheel chocks removed?
  • Safety chains connected?

For those who own multiple trailers, Truck App allows drivers to name each trailer and collect and store accumulated mileage for each – for up to 10 different trailers, displaying helpful information such as accumulated miles for a particular unit, trailer brake gain (with available integrated brake controller) and output.

Off-road information
The Truck App also caters to the off-road enthusiast with unique information screens such as pitch-and-roll, which shows the angle of surface incline, the degree of tilt and steering angle.

The app on the F-150 SVT Raptor includes a specific screen that shows the status of Hill Descent Control™, off-road mode and the 4×4 system.

In addition to the Truck App software application, the more traditional screen menus include:

  • Gauge mode – includes real-time temperature transmission oil
  • Trip A/B – includes trip time and mileage information and tracks two trips
  • Fuel economy – tracks fuel consumption history and offers selectable displays for efficiency in miles to empty, average and instantaneous
  • Settings – allows the customer to turn features on or off, change autolamp time, set trailer brake setting and monitor oil life
  • Information – provides management of the MyKey® feature, a system check screen and key system warnings for trailer sway control, Hill Descent Control and Tire Pressure Monitoring System

The F-150 productivity screen is standard on all FX2/FX4, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum models. It is also available on XLT as part of the XLT Convenience Package.

Teaching Green: Ford Empowers Eco-Drivers to Maximize Fuel Efficiency

March 25, 2011

With gas prices on the rise, driving technologies available inside Ford vehicles are coaching consumers to more fuel-efficient miles every time they get behind the wheel. These technologies, which include EcoMode and SmartGauge™ with EcoGuide, are designed to be eco-friendly and fun to use, all while helping drivers save money.

“Fuel economy and technology are consumers’ biggest priorities – and we have made them Ford’s as well,” said Mark Fields, Ford president, The Americas. “Our product portfolio reflects the investment Ford has made to transform our lineup in the past several years so our customers can be greener – and keep even more green in their wallets – than when fuel prices reached $4 per gallon in 2008.”

Ford’s suite of green driving technologies enable consumers to modify their driving habits through coaching methods and rewards that encourage eco-friendly driving behaviors. By making simple adjustments in everyday driving habits – from rolling up windows when traveling more than 50 mph to staying on top of vehicle maintenance – consumers can increase their fuel efficiency while decreasing their impact on the environment and the cost of vehicle ownership. Additionally, safety features like Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems further enhance fuel savings, reducing the average amount of fuel use 3 to 4 percent.

Ford’s growing lineup of green driving technologies and driving tips include:

EcoMode

EcoMode coaches consumers in the art of eco-driving using real-time feedback, while scoring and rewards are displayed on the instrument cluster. The software application generates a personalized driver operation scorecard by rating driver behavior that impacts fuel efficiency. Scores are displayed using an easy-to-follow five-leaf icon, with two leaves set as the default and five leaves being the maximum achievable score. Throughout a drive, the scoring system generates hints on how to gain more leaves by implementing eco-driving methods. It also allows drivers to review their generated score against the software’s optimized eco-driving patterns. Testing has shown a 24 percent fuel economy increase, on average.

MyFord Touch with EcoRoute

MyFord Touch™ provides drivers with real-time feedback on vehicle fuel efficiency and performance, helping coach drivers to maximize their miles per gallon. With the addition of EcoRoute, a map-based navigation system that instantly calculates the most fuel-efficient driving route, consumers are further empowered to control their fuel efficiency, with testing demonstrating fuel economy gains of up to 15 percent.

SmartGauge with EcoGuide

SmartGauge with EcoGuide is a unique instrument cluster specifically designed for hybrid vehicle owners. The technology creates a more connected driving experience, by coaching drivers to further maximize the fuel efficiency of their hybrid vehicle through real-time feedback and rewards. SmartGauge with EcoGuide features full-color LCD screens that can be configured to show different levels of information, including fuel and battery power levels, average and instant miles per gallon, and growing leaves and vines that track and reward the driver’s efficiency – more leaves and vines denote better driving habits.

MyFord Mobile

While electric cars are eco-friendly in their own right, the all-new MyFord Mobile app, exclusively for Focus Electric, helps extend eco-friendly driving behaviors by allowing consumers to make smart trip planning decisions that will extend the range of their vehicle, while also delivering driving behavior ratings ranging from Zen to zippy. Similar to SmartGauge with EcoGuide, Focus Electric also comes equipped with an instrument cluster display that uses blue butterflies to represent the surplus range beyond a charge point destination – the more butterflies there are, the greater the range and the better the driving habits.

The power of choice

Electrification is an important piece of Ford’s overall product sustainability strategy. Ford’s aggressive strategy includes five new electrified vehicles in North America by 2012 and Europe by 2013. Ford launched the Transit Connect Electric small commercial van in 2010 and in addition to Focus Electric in late 2011, will introduce C-MAX Hybrid, a second next-generation lithium-ion battery hybrid and the C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid in 2012.

Best-in-class fuel economy

Ford Motor Company offers at least 12 vehicles that lead their sales segments in fuel economy – including four vehicles with EPA-certified 40 mpg or higher fuel economy ratings – a claim no other full-line automaker can match.

Fuller Ford can help you find the most fuel efficient vehicle to fit your individual needs. DEF Frequently Asked Questions

March 7, 2011

Does it cost more to operate a 2011 Super Duty since it requires DEF?

A primary advantage of having SCR/DEF on the new Power Stroke diesel engine is the 5-8 percent increase in fuel efficiency compared to a diesel engine using a Lean NOx Trap. This means the 2011 Super Duty is more efficient to operate than a Ram Pickup and the 2010 Super Duty models. Here’s a quick look at the potential annual SCR/DEF operating costs/savings:

Assumptions

  • DEF is $3-5 per gallon
  • Customer will use approximately 5 gallons every 7500 miles
  • Customer will see a 5-8 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to an LNT system

Operating Costs/Savings

  • Two DEF refills = $30-50
  • Fuel savings = $142-222 ($3 per gallon)
  • Total annual savings is $92-192

BOTTOM LINE: 2011 Super Duty is more cost effective to operate than Silverado HD even with both vehicles using an SCR/DEF system.

When should the DEF tank be refilled?

Customer will receive a number of audible warnings and dash messages, beginning at approximately 800 miles before the DEF tank is empty. Under normal operation, the DEF should only require filling with the recommended oil change intervals. Towing can increase DEF consumption.

Will the truck still run if refill warnings are ignored?

The truck will experience reduced engine speeds as the DEF tank approaches empty, eventually forcing the engine idle when the DEF tank is depleted.

If a truck is not used for a while, will the DEF need to be replaced?

The system will monitor DEF quality and adjust for conditions of use or non-use. The warnings and dash messages will indicate when the fluid needs to be refilled.

Can new DEF be added to the DEF already in the tank?

Yes. Motorcraft DEF is widely available in 1 and 2.5 gallon bottles for customer use. Ford recommends only API-certified DEF.

Will DEF freeze?

DEF has a freezing point of 12 degrees Fahrenheit (F). The DEF tank, supply module and lines are heated to help prevent freezing while the truck is in operation as well as thaw any frozen fluid once started. DEF expands when it freezes; the DEF tank is designed to allow for this expansion.

Can the truck be started and operated if the DEF is frozen?

Yes, the truck can be started and operated while the DEF thaws.

Where is the DEF fill port located?

It is located on the driver’s side of the truck next to the diesel fuel filler and is easily identified by its smaller, blue cap.

What if the wrong fluid is added to the DEF tank?

If improper fluid is added, the DEF tank must be drained completely before adding additional DEF to avoid contamination. The truck should be immediately taken to the dealer for service if improper fluid is added.

What is the shelf life for DEF?

DEF has a minimum shelf life of one year if stored between 12 and 86 degrees F. Note that in warmer climates, DEF will have a shorter shelf life.
