From Fiesta to F-Series, Consumers See Growing Value in Ford’s Fuel-Efficient Lineup

April 8, 2011

Consumer demand for Ford’s fuel-efficient vehicles continues to grow as March sales increased 19 percent versus a year ago. Year-to-date, Ford sales totaled 496,720, up 16 percent.

“With gasoline prices eclipsing $3.50 a gallon, consumers are placing a high priority on fuel efficiency in every size and kind of vehicle,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “Customers are rewarding Ford for our investment in new products as well as more efficient engines and transmissions, which save them money at the pump whether they drive Fiestas or F-Series trucks.”

Ford offers 12 vehicles that lead their sales segments in fuel economy, including four vehicles with EPA certified 40 mpg or higher fuel economy ratings – a claim no other full-line automaker can match.

CARS

Ford’s new Fiesta set a record in March as monthly sales reached 9,787, up 56 percent from February. Fiesta’s retail share of its segment has increased every month since it was introduced last summer, and Los Angeles continues to be the No. 1 sales region for Fiesta.

Fusion also set a new record with sales of 27,566, up 21 percent versus a year ago.

The Ford Mustang (up 47 percent) also posted higher sales than a year ago.

Total Focus sales were lower than a year ago (down 12 percent) as the all-new model is just starting to arrive at Ford dealers, but the nameplate’s retail sales were up 16 percent.

UTILITIES

Sales of Ford’s utility vehicles were paced by the all-new Ford Explorer, which had its best sales month since June 2007. Explorer sales totaled 12,482, up 111 percent, making the new Explorer Ford’s fastest-turning vehicle in the showroom for a third straight month.

Explorer’s class-leading EPA estimated highway fuel economy of 25 mpg is attracting owners of other makes. Its current conquest rate is 43 percent.

The Escape set a new March sales record – and its second best month overall – with sales of 23,975, up 25 percent versus a year ago. Sales of the new Ford Edge (up 21 percent) were higher as were sales of the Ford Expedition (up 40 percent).

TRUCKS

Strong sales to commercial fleet customers as well as higher sales to retail customers powered Ford truck sales growth in March. Sales of Ford’s F-Series truck totaled 53,272, up 25 percent versus a year ago.

In January, Ford launched the 2011 F-150 with four all-new powertrains including two V6s – a 3.7-liter and a 3.5-liter EcoBoost. In March, V6-equipped F150s accounted for 37 percent of all 2011 F-150 retail sales.

“The No. 1 unmet need for full-size pickup truck owners has been fuel economy,” said Doug Scott, Truck Group marketing manager. “The good news is the 2011 Ford F-150 has best-in-class fuel economy, best-in-class capability and power, plus more powertrain choices to suit customers’ different needs.”

Ford’s commercial vehicles also posted strong year-to-year increases. Econoline sales totaled 11,827 (up 13 percent) and Transit Connect sales were 2,690 (up 47 percent).

SALES SUMMARY

In March, total sales were 212,777, up 19 percent. Retail sales were up 14 percent and fleet sales were up 29 percent (commercial was up 50 percent, government was up 33 percent and daily rental was up 13 percent).

In the first quarter, total sales were 496,720, up 16 percent. Retail sales were up 20 percent and fleet sales were up 8 percent (commercial was up 34 percent, government was up 11 percent, and daily rental was down 8 percent).

Two independent market research studies cited the growing strength of the Ford brand in March. Ford was named the most considered auto brand among new-car shoppers in Kelley Blue Books’ Market Intelligence Brand Watch study, and Ford was named top full-line automotive brand in the 2011 Harris Poll EquiTrend study.

“Our newest products are helping Ford to connect with customers beyond our traditional geographic areas of strength,” said Czubay. “In the first quarter, our largest retail sales increases were on the west coast and in the northeast with major contributions from the Fiesta and Edge. We believe the new Focus and Explorer will help us to achieve further growth in these and other key markets as even more customers look for fuel-efficient, high-quality vehicles with technology they truly value.”

Ford’s Hot-Selling Fiesta to Make 2010 SEMA Debut, Putting Small Car Style and Performance on the Map

October 29, 2010

People love to modify small cars, so it’s no surprise that consumers and aftermarket companies are eager to get their hands on Ford’s hot-selling Fiesta, set to debut at this year’s SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show in Las Vegas Nov. 2-5.

“The Fiesta is one of those vehicles that resonates with everybody – especially with the younger market. Whatever you’re into, it works,” said Melvin Betancourt, Ford specialty design manager. “It lends itself to a lot of different themes. It’s a perfect fit for the aftermarket and for customers who want to express their personality.”

“SEMA offers the perfect opportunity to showcase all the different ways the personalities of the Fiesta can be expressed,” said Sam De La Garza, Fiesta brand manager.

“It really shows how Fiesta can be accessorized and how this canvas can be altered to meet many different customer wants and desires,” De La Garza said. “SEMA represents a special opportunity, because we can show off unique designs that other companies have created. It’s not just Ford coming to the table. It’s other companies interpreting what Fiesta is, and bringing their own style to the Fiesta launch.”

Customization is something already familiar to Fiesta owners. Ford Custom Accessories offers almost anything an owner would need to put a creative touch on Fiesta or give the car even more functionality. Accessory options include exterior or interior design items such as an illuminated gear indicator shift knob and rear spoiler, even a kayak carrier to haul outdoor gear. Customers also can order a body-side tattoo, or choose from one of 18 available graphics to put their own mark on Fiesta.

“Small cars are unique in that people love to modify them, whether it’s the exterior, interior, or even performance parts,” De La Garza said.

Ford Racing Performance Parts is putting its own spin on a Fiesta at SEMA, outfitting a concept Fiesta in a way that is sure to get the hearts of high-performance enthusiasts pumping. The Fiesta will have a production-based 2.0-liter EcoBoost™ engine, enlarged to 2.3 liters to pump out 350 horsepower.

“The goal of our 350-horsepower Fiesta is really twofold – first to reinforce Fiesta’s fun-to-drive nature with an extreme version that captures the attention of the influential enthusiast, and second, to introduce the Ford Racing/EcoBoost connection in a way that’s unexpected and outrageous,” said Mickey Matus, Ford Racing Performance group marketing manager. “In both cases, we’re targeting the discriminating performance enthusiast with our message. After all, they are the people others rely on for automotive expertise and recommendations.”
The car comes equipped with several Ford Racing Performance Parts options that are currently available at www.fordracingparts.com. A short-throw shifter offers more precise shifting, while a Ford Racing exhaust gives off a deeper, throatier exhaust note. Also available are 17-inch wheels that are cast-aluminum and painted in charcoal gray.

Additionally, the car features Brembo brakes that offer the ultimate in stopping power, and Ohlins dual-flow valve dampers that deliver comfort and agility.

Ford Racing’s Fiesta will arrive in all-blue, pristine condition, and will be painted by a renowned artist during the show with the intention of auctioning the car in the future to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF).

Fiesta Facebook Challenge Lets Fans Push Envelope of Fun, Brings Back Fiesta Movement Agents

October 21, 2010

Fans of the Ford Fiesta are being asked to get their creative juices flowing again, thanks to the Ford Fiesta Facebook Challenge where Fiesta Facebook fans participate in monthly challenges inspired by missions done by Fiesta Movement agents.

“We’re extending the challenges we gave to our Fiesta Movement agents to our Facebook fans, so it’s a perfect way to let Fiesta Movement followers get in on the fun,” said Sam De La Garza, Fiesta brand manager. “Each challenge perfectly aligns with the fun nature of Fiesta, and we’re hoping the fans come out to show what they can create.”

The challenge kicks off this week with Zombie Survival Guide, which asks users to “zombify” themselves and create a picture that pushes the envelope of creativity. An introductory video by former Fiesta Movement agents for each challenge helps give the user a better idea of what the challenge requires. Check out the inspirational video for Zombie Survival Guide here: http://tinyurl.com/zombieshatefiesta.

Other challenges include:

  • Wear Craig’s Beard for a Day, which asks users to edit a picture of themselves to include former Fiesta Movement agent Craig’s beard and tell people what their favorite feature on the Fiesta is. Check out the inspirational video here: http://tinyurl.com/craigexclusivefeatures
  • Match Brittini’s Donation, which has fans match former Fiesta Movement agent Brittini’s donation to their favorite charity and take a video or picture of it to share. Check out the inspirational video here: http://tinyurl.com/brittanibears
  • Fifteenth Feature, which, in a take on Craig’s personalized list of 14 “exclusive” Fiesta features, asks users to shoot a photo of their idea for a 15th subjective feature. Check out the inspirational video here: http://tinyurl.com/craigexclusives

“We’re letting people engage in Facebook Challenge similar to how they could interact with Fiesta Movement agents and their missions, but this time they get to create the content,” said Brian McClary, Ford social and emerging media specialist. “This challenge will let us keep the organic nature of the program rolling and give users who want to share content an avenue to do so.”

Once challenges are complete, Facebook users will vote on the best content and a winner will be awarded a prize each month. When the challenge ends in January, the overall winner will win an Apple iPad, with a leader board on the Fiesta Facebook fan page updating users on the standings.

Ford Fiesta “Unwraps” Itself With Unique New Interactive Owner Delivery Experience

July 15, 2010

When 2011 Ford Fiesta owners pick up their new car, they’ll enjoy learning about it in a whole new way through the use of an interactive USB. Ford created the new delivery program for the Fiesta to make the initial owner experience as unique as the owners themselves, and is the first automaker to create such a program.

As part of the Ford Retail Movement, a dealer-readiness program, Ford has been working with targeted dealers, focusing on three key areas – preparing the sales force, engaging the customer, and creating a distinct new car delivery experience. The Fiesta delivery is designed to be particularly unique, since the approach is different than anything Ford has ever done before.

“Everything about the launch of the Fiesta has been different and the delivery experience is redefining how customers become acquainted with their new product,” said Paul Anderson, Ford small car marketing manager. “The Fiesta movement started the engagement with consumers and the delivery process continues the dialogue. This makes owners a part of something special.”

The Fiesta “unpackaging” experience is a new way for Ford and its dealers to interact with customers, and shows that Ford is trending towards a customer experience that does more than deliver a car – it brings the vehicle to life.

The experience kicks off with a short video featuring Fiesta Movement agents that is viewed on a kiosk located on the showroom floor. Following the video, consumers have their picture taken with their new ride, which is then uploaded to the Fiesta Community site.

On their way home, the owner plugs the preloaded USB into the Fiesta that “unwraps” the car and helps owners explore all the cool features in their new car, all in nineteen minutes of infotainment-type audio. Topics ranging from push button start, to the sound-deadening windshield glass are covered.

Once they get home, the USB goes into their home computer and downloads a Fiesta Community app, which is a place they can continue to engage with Ford, their dealer and other Fiesta enthusiasts.

Features of the Fiesta Community app include:

  • Fiestapedia: Serves as an online wiki, where owners can get tips from other owners and contribute their own ideas, with more than fifteen categories to choose from.
  • Photoshop: Users can retrieve their photo taken when they received their car, and Photoshop in a background, with more than fifty to choose from. After the photo is completed, it can easily be shared through social media channels like Facebook.
  • Online Community: Connects owners through collaboration with Fiesta Faction, an existing enthusiast club.
  • Dealer Store: Ties owners in with their dealer, so they can check out their Facebook page or website, and keep up-to-date with events.
  • Podcasts: Offers a dozen podcasts with greater detail about the features on Fiesta, such as safety and SYNC.
  • Fiesta News: Provides updated news on the world of Fiesta
  • Ford Connections: Makes it easy to connect with Ford, through www.fordvehicles.com, www.syncmyride.com and www.flmowner.com.

“The Fiesta Movement has taught us that consumers want to continue the dialogue with Ford Motor Company and other Fiesta owners,” said Anderson. “Fiesta continues to push the boundaries of how we launch products and how we interact with our customers.”

The all-new Fiesta is on sale now and featuring an expressive design, class-leading technologies and best-in-class highway fuel economy of 40 mpg. Fiesta brings efficiency and convenience together in one package.

2011 Ford Fiesta: Safety and Security

June 30, 2010

The all new 2011 Fiesta is big on safety, offering a host of accident avoidance and occupant protection features to help keep drivers and passengers safe. Here’s a quick overview of some key Fiesta safety and security features.

SEVEN STANDARD AIRBAGS

Fiesta comes with seven standard airbags, including:

  • Driver knee – Located under the instrument panel, the class-exclusive driver knee airbag works along with the driver’s front airbag to help reduce injury to legs. When the driver’s airbag deploys in a collision, the knee airbag deploys from under the instrument panel
  • Front, dual-stage – Deploy high or low output, or not at all, depending on the severity of the frontal crash to make sure the appropriate level of airbag pressure is used
  • Front-seat side – Side-impact airbags help protect front-seat occupants in certain side collisions. The airbags deploy from the sides of the front seatbacks to help protect occupants’ chest.
  • Side curtain – Combined with the front-seat side airbags, the side curtain airbags help provide protection for both head and chest in certain side-impact collisions for all outboard seating positions. These airbags are designed to slide between the glass and the occupant as it inflates

STRUCTURAL SAFETY

More than 50 percent of the Fiesta body structure is made from ultra-high-strength, lightweight boron steel, which helps protect occupant safety zones

SECURILOCK PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM

This system enhances Fiesta security by using an electronically coded ignition key (with billions of possible codes) designed to help prevent the engine from being started unless a coded key programmed to the vehicle is used.

PERSONAL SAFETY SYSTEM

The Ford Personal Safety System tailors airbag usage to the severity of the crash, driver and passenger safety belt use, driver’s seat position and passenger classification. System components include:

  • Dual-state driver and front passenger airbags
  • Electronic front crash severity sensor
  • Driver’s-seat position sensor
  • Front outboard safety belt usage sensor
  • Restraint Control Module
  • Front outboard safety belt energy management retractors
  • Front outboard safety belt pretensioners
  • “Smart” Front Passenger Sensing System

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS)

  • This accident-avoidance feature is a sensor-based system that alerts the driver to significant under inflation in any of the tires, excluding the spare
  • Pressure sensors in the tires detect actual tire pressure and activate a warning light in the vehicle’s instrument cluster when a tire is significantly underinflated

SOS POST CRASH ALERT SYSTEM

This system helps give Fiesta drivers added peace of mind by automatically:

  • Activating the hazard flashers and sounding the horn after a crash in which the airbags deploy. This can help make the vehicle easier to locate if the accident happens off the roadway

ADVANCETRAC ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL

AdvanceTrac helps the driver maintain vehicle stability in adverse driving situations or when making evasive maneuvers on slippery pavement.

  • Monitors vehicle’s cornering behavior with steering angle, lateral acceleration and yaw rate sensors, and automatically makes braking and throttle adjustments to match vehicle’s direction to the driver’s intention using Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Traction Control components
  • AdvanceTrac automatically activates whenever the vehicle is started, but may be turned off for certain situations such as when “rocking” a vehicle stuck in mud or snow

TRACTION CONTROL

Included with AdvanceTrac, Fiesta also comes standard with Traction Control, which uses a combination of brake and/or engine control to maximize available traction on slippery or loose driving surfaces at any speed.

911 ASSIST

This safety feature is part of SYNC and assists occupants in placing a 911 call in certain vehicle crashes by using a properly paired mobile phone inside the vehicle.

  • SYNC can use a properly paired mobile phone to place the 911 call
  • Occupants can cancel the call by pressing and holding the phone button on the steering wheel, or by confirming the cancellation message on the Navigation System screen
  • Connects to a 911 operator informing them of the accident
  • Opens the SYNC microphone to allow vehicle occupants to communicate hands-free with the 911 operator
